Nail Clips: Trimming away the terror

Being a vet nurse and working in a vet clinic, I see many pets who come in for nail clips. Many of them fine with having their nails clipped but there are a few who find it stressful.

Nail clipping problems and anxiety often stems from trying to do too much at once and overwhelming the pet.

Here I have a few tips on how you can minimize stress and make nail clips comfortable for your pets.

  1. Ensure your pet is on a non-slip surface, this can include a towel or a rug. Slippery floors and uneven surfaces can be stressful for many pets especially older pets.

  2. Calming scents or supplements. Pheromones such as Adaptil or Feliway are great at achieving calmness. Zylkene is a great natural supplement that can be given for stressful situations.

  3. Treats! - who doesn't love food. Use a mixture of different treats so your pet doesn't associate the 1 food with nail clipping. Good examples of treats are; cabanossi, cheese, peanut butter, vegemite and liver treats. Just remember to feed in small portions.
