Alternative to 'the cone of shame'

Most owners at some stage will have had an experience with an elizabethan collar, also known as 'the cone of shame'. The cone is designed to prevent the animal from turning their body to lick or chew at their surgical sites or injuries. Both owners and their pets hate the cone, but it does play an important role in the healing process of wounds. But did you know there were alternatives to the plastic 'cone of shame'.

- Pillow Collars: Just like e-collars these sit around the pet's neck but are made of cloth inflatable material. They have a better appearance to the traditional plastic cone and are more comfortable for the patient but if not fitted properly the pet can still turn around and access their wound.

- Cloth Cones: The cones are made from cloth and are sturdy to an extent but also collapsible. Due to them being made from cloth they are much more comfortable for the pet but they can collapse too easy in some instances, again making it easier for the pet to access the wound.

- T-shirts and Singlets: For pets that have large wounds on their abdomen or side, rather then wearing an e-collar which can stress the patient out, having the pet wear a t-shirt or singlet provides a way for the patient to not be able to access their wound.

- Socks: Socks are a great way to cover up feet wounds, but its important to ensure they are secured to the patient as they may be able to remove the sock and get to their wound.

- Bitterant: The least invasive way to help your pet's wound heal and to ensure they don't assist in the process of removing their bandages or sutures. Although bitterant is great for most pets, there are some that it won't work for.
